Soroptomist International South West Pacific Conference

Recently I was invited to speak about the plight of the Burmese refugee at the SISWP conference which was held in Chiang Rai.

This was a great opportunity to discuss the reality of those thousands of people who are residing in the various refugee camps and alternate locations throughout the Thai-Burma border, and throughout Thailand.

With so much world attention on the current crisis in the Delta region after the devastation of Cyclone Nargis it is sobering to remember that thousands of people have fled Burma over a period of thirty years fleeing for their lives from the persecution by their own government. Forgotten by the rest of the world as nothing worthy of media attention has happened in over twenty years except that more and more people join them each year.

H2O joins Haven Homes

June 3rd, 2008 by Jane

Last month all the Haven home children in Lamphun had their yearly check ups and I am pleased to report that all are healthy, many having a growth spurt last year. The “winner” is Sang gow who has grown a massive 11cms in the last year

Recently the Haven Foundation took H2O a children’s home in the Umphang region, under its wing. H2O looks after Thai and Burmese children, with no where else to go. It is situated next to the Thai Burma border, in a fairly remote and hard to get to location. The home has eighteen children and some others that border there, as their parent/s work long hours and often far away.

Two weeks ago many of the children started school, often for the first time in their lives. Most of the children are healthy but some have minor nutritional deficits, and one of the children has juvenile glaucoma and has already lost an eye. Medical treatment has commenced to try and save the other eye which is damaged.

We will continue to update you about all the children.
